Two events with Robert Whitaker in Brighton in December

In December there will be two events taking place with Robert Whitaker in Brighton. Places are limited for both events, so early booking is advisable.

'Soteria in the Pub' on 6th December

On the evening of Thursday 6th December Soteria Brighton will be holding their first 'Soteria in the Pub' event.  And what a first event it is too.  Robert Whitaker, award winning journalist from Boston, US, and author of ‘Mad in America’ and ‘Anatomy of an Epidemic’, two of the most popular and incisive books in the field of mental health in recent years, will be in conversation with a local psychiatrist, and with members of the audience too of course.  The topic of conversation, naturally, will be the medical model, the evidence base for it, and the use of psychiatric medication, amongst other things.  Following the conversation there will be some music to enjoy and the opportunity to continue the conversation over a drink or two.  Tickets are limited and you are advised to book early (£5 or £3 concessions). For full details of the event, and to book tickets, please visit this page on the Soteria Brighton website or telephone 07583 439036.

'Open Dialogue, Soteria and the Medical Model' on 7th December

On Friday 7th December the Open Paradigm Project will be running its first event, ‘Open Dialogue, Soteria, and the Medical Model’, a day long seminar with Robert Whitaker and Nick Putman focusing on the problematics of the evidence base at the heart of the medical model, particularly for ‘psychosis’. Two alternative models will be presented, the Open Dialogue model from Finland and the Soteria model, both of which themselves have a strong evidence base. The results of the Open Dialogue studies in particular are very impressive - the best documented outcomes in the Western World.

Robert Whitaker will be talking about his research into the evidence base for the use of antipsychotics, which suggests that they may well be increasing the severity/chronicity of psychosis in the long-term, as well as the implications from the research into the Open Dialogue and Soteria models. Nick Putman is a psychotherapist who is actively involved in the development of the Soteria and Open Dialogue models in the UK. He has been to Western Lapland twice this year to study the Open Dialogue approach, and will be introducing the approach as well as describing his experience of being with the Open Dialogue teams in Finland. He will also be introducing the Soteria model and contrasting it with the Open Dialogue approach.

To celebrate the formation of the Open Paradigm Project this seminar is being offered at a reduced rate of £40 for the day, with a £20 rate for students and those who are low-waged and a £5 rate for those in receipt of benefits. For more detail on the seminar, and to book your place, please visit this page on the Open Paradigm Project website or telephone 01273 930999.
